Our direction

Mission, vision and strategic goals

The statements below are proposed corporate wording, intended to be reviewed and edited by the company.

Mission

To make footwear with careful craftsmanship and functional design, and to build collaborative, transparent relationships with our business partners.

Vision

To grow into a respected footwear manufacturing business known for dependable work and thoughtful attention to detail.

Strategic goals

Consistent quality, continuous process improvement, strong material awareness and long-term partnerships built on mutual trust.

Manufacturing

From concept to dispatch

A typical footwear production sequence. Actual workflows vary by product and factory; confirm specifics before publishing as company practice.

  1. Design & development

Concepts, technical drawings and samples define the style, fit and construction method.

  2. Material selection

Leathers, textiles, linings, soles and components are chosen for appearance, performance and use.

  3. Pattern making & cutting

Patterns for each upper part are created, then materials are cut with attention to grain and defects.

  4. Upper stitching & assembly

Cut pieces are skived, joined and stitched, and linings and reinforcements are added.

  5. Lasting & shaping

The upper is pulled over a last, a foot-shaped form, to give the shoe its shape.

  6. Sole attachment

Soles are joined to the upper by cementing, stitching or moulding, depending on construction.

  7. Finishing & inspection

Shoes are cleaned, polished and checked for finish, symmetry and construction.

  8. Packaging & dispatch

Finished pairs are paired, packed and prepared for shipment.

Leather & materials

Understanding footwear materials

General material knowledge for context. This does not state which materials Balkan Footwear currently uses.

Full-grain leather

Uses the complete top layer of the hide with its natural grain intact. Known for durability and for developing a patina over time.

Dress shoes, boots

Top-grain leather

The surface is lightly sanded or buffed to even out blemishes, giving a more uniform look and often a smoother, more consistent finish.

Casual and formal footwear

Suede

Leather with a soft, napped surface, usually from the flesh side or underside of the hide. Soft but more sensitive to moisture and stains.

Casual shoes, boots

Nubuck

Grain-side leather lightly sanded to a fine velvety nap. Typically more resilient than suede, with a refined matte look.

Boots, casual footwear

Textiles & linings

Woven and knitted fabrics, mesh and lining materials affect breathability, comfort and weight inside and outside the shoe.

Uppers, linings, insoles

Soles: rubber, EVA, PU

Rubber offers grip and wear resistance. EVA is a light, cushioned foam. Polyurethane (PU) balances flexibility, cushioning and durability.

Outsoles and midsoles

Grade versus animal source. Full-grain and top-grain describe how leather is processed and which layer of the hide is used. Cowhide, calfskin, goatskin and sheepskin describe the animal the hide comes from. The two are independent: for example, calfskin can be full-grain or top-grain.
